In this type of question, your ability to understand a text and infer the best summary of multiple options is mainly evaluated. The reader will listen to the loudspeaker of the recording and, in the end, must select the paragraph that best suits the author’s content.

Be smart is the key of the success

  • Listen carefully to what the speaker says.
  • In the seconds before starting the audio, do a general scan of the available options, do not try to read all the sentences
  • Focus on the first sentence and the sentences after each period in a row.
  • The law of discarding applies. Eliminate one by one until you select the one that best suits you according to a summary of the text
  • These questions are usually complex and even difficult to understand. Therefore, I recommend selecting two phrases simultaneously and following the audio as it progresses, discarding each answer that does not correspond.
  • Be careful with irrelevant information; some tricks they put in is to put one more word that is not mentioned in the audio; that is the best criterion to discard.
  • Identify the central theme of the audio; the audio always focuses on a single topic, and the rest that is talked about is to complement and exemplify.
  • Be especially careful with negations; for the most part, the sentences are expressed with an idea opposite the central idea.
  • Discard the option that offers additional information that was not mentioned in the audio.
  • Pay particular attention to phrases that contain extremes, for example, Always, all, should. These phases are often false.
  • In some cases, the options can be eliminated by discarding partial information; it is a frequent trick in these questions in more than 90% they are false.
  • You only have ten seconds before the recording starts to play. Flip through the paragraphs to get the general sense of the recording you will hear.
  • When you start recording, make practical notes organized in a general outline. Focus on the main ideas and omit descriptions and explanations. Try to identify the topic sentence.
  • Reread your notes and very quickly summarize all the information in your head. Then focus on each paragraph and delete the wrong ones as you check each one against your notes and the mental summary you’ve created.
  • Each paragraph of the answer can be up to 60 words long; identifying and anticipating the topic is the best way to focus on listening when the recording begins.
  • Sometimes the main idea is not stated directly but is implicit. Those should listen carefully to all the details and try to develop the main idea.
