Write from dictation

This is the interface of the question. It is important to familiarize yourself with the form because the exam does not warn you that they change the type of question.

In this type of question, your ability to understand a sentence and to be able to write it verbatim is mainly evaluated. The reader must write. The test taker must listen carefully to the audio and then write down exactly what they hear. This is one of the most important questions on the exam.

Impacts on: Listening and writing

Audio Time: 3 – 5 maximum seconds per question

Ideal response time: 30 – 40 seconds

Questions: 3- 4

Marks:  50 Marks

Be smart is the key of the success

Focus on listening to the text in detail

  • Follow the sequence as the speaker speaks, writing each word and line of the terms mentioned.
  • Do not worry about having all the words, although the ideal is to have the whole sentence, remember that points are received for each correct word.
  • Follow the following strategy: (1) Listen + type, (2) complete and (3) correct.
  • By this method, I mean that you can write one, two or three initials of the word or use your symbols scheme.
  • At the end of the audio, go back and start completing the words, don’t worry about capitalization or punctuation.
  • Go back to the beginning of the sentence, change capital letters, check how each word is written, place the punctuation accordingly and correct.
  • Practice typing in a Word document removing the option to identify errors. In this way, you will refine your ability for this type of question and for the others that require writing.
  • For this question, you can use the same Repeat Sentence strategies.

Half & Half

In this strategy, the idea is to divide the sentence into two parts, write the first half, and remember the second half. Or vice versa.

Symbols

Create your vocabulary of words with easy-to-write symbols

Initials

Just write the first initial of each letter.

Two initials

Write the first two or three letters of each word.

Hybrid

Write half of the sentence with one or two first letters and remember half of the sentence.

Be careful with grammar. It is referring mainly to:

Singular pronouns (he, she, it) go with plural verbs (s -es), or pronouns in the plural (I, we, they) the verb is singular.

  • When you use present perfect, the verb is in third form, either ED or the corresponding verb.
  • It is a simple trick, but it will help you a lot!
  • Be careful with spelling or the way you write words; it says this from my own experience; my fingers often type the letters in the wrong order; that is why I recommend reading each sentence 2 and 3 times before continuing with the next question.
  • Focus on the general context of the sentence; if for some reason I can’t get all the words, no problem, you will still get a score for each correct word.
  • Be careful with plural words; they are generally a bit difficult to understand or hear, but you can also define them by the context of the sentence.
  • The initial letter in the first word or after a period is always capitalized.
  • Final point. Always place the final period in the sentence or If you do not include these first capital letters and final period, these words will have a value of 0.
  • Write the words or keywords of the content in the answer box or write them in the erasable whiteboard provided. Then add the function words and inflectional endings, using your knowledge of English grammar and sentence structure, as well as your memory.

Be careful with these types of questions, because it is the last exam, you are already tired, and unfortunately, the brain plays a trick on us. We see and read the same misspelled word several times, and we understand that it is correct; remember that in the exam, the red line of the word will not appear, indicating that the word is misspelled.

  • If you analyze this type of question, it has a great value in the punctuation, dedicate a great effort in practising Repeat sentences and Write from dictation. These two types of queries significantly impact the final score, even more than the essay itself.
  • Use your phonetic and grammatical knowledge when checking to spell.
  • According to the previous advice, practice, trying to write everything you can, practice with what you hear in the news, podcast, what friends say in traditional conversations or everything that comes to mind.
  • Listening and writing – This skill is decisive for obtaining a much higher score. Personally, to awaken this ability during the last three weeks before the exam, I took this as a mental game and as if it were the only value that I was going to evaluate. To do this, I kept a notebook in my hands; when watching TV, I tried to write as many words as they said, starting with concise sentences, to gain confidence, simple sentences, S + V + C, and gradually I began to increase the complexity, reinforcing memory and developing my symbol system (this is key), to the point that I managed to write great sentences with more than 15 words. This contributed significantly to the score.
